LANGUAGE STUDIES AT THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE
To successfully complete studies at the Faculty of Science, students are obliged to pass examinations JA001 (in the English language – Bachelor’s studies) and JA002 (in any language offered – Master’s studies). If students reach the required level, they can pass examination JA002 already in the Bachelor’s studies (in that case, students need not pass examination JA001).
COURSES OF ENGLISH FOR SPEFICIC PURPOSES 1 TO 4
Courses of English for Specific Purposes 1 to 4 (English for Biology: JAB01-4; English for Chemists: JAC01-4; English for Physicists: JAF01-4; English for Geologists: JAG01-4; English for Mathematicians: JAM01-4; English for Geographers: JAZ01-4; and English for Teachers of Science: JAT01-4 (only in Master’s studies)) are not compulsory but are recommended.
It is advisable to complete these courses one by one but it is not a condition (the courses follow up each other loosely). Students can register for the more advanced courses even without having completed the basic courses if they have the required level of knowledge.
Courses 1 and 2 help students prepare for examination JA001, courses 3 and 4 serve as a basis for examination JA002. Moreover, a different practical skill is taught in each of the courses (presentation of posters, formal letter, presentation and job interview; courses for teachers focus on giving feedback and teaching methodology). The required initial level when enrolling in the course of English for Specific Purposes 1 is B1 according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (Lower Intermediate).
To verify the level, it is recommended that the students take the Language Test Dialang (code CJV_DIAL), which is available in the IS; the test is mandatory for first-year students (from the academic year 2019/20).
